Dick Whale, Independent Breeding and Marketing Service, Wangaratta, VIC bought the top priced bull for $8000 on
behalf of Rob Crosby, Kansas Angus, Boggbri. He is pictured here with The Grange Angus Stud principal, David Kirwan, Bungowannah near Wodonga, Vic.

A focus on outcross genetics for outstanding growth and eye muscle size paid dividends for the Kirwan Family at their inaugural The Grange Angus sale at Bungowannah near Wodonga, Victoria, last Wednesday.

In the breakdown, 15 of the 24 bulls offered sold at auction to a top of $8000 to average $3067.

In the heifer portion, six of the nine offered sold to a top of $5500 for a $2383 average.

The sale top of $8000 was paid by Rob Crosby, Kansas Angus, Boggabri, for 12 month old The Grange Right Time EFT D6, by highline Right Time 338 and from Imran Miss Vegas U20, and was bought on his behalf by Dick Whale, Independent Breeding and Marketing Service, Wangarratta VIC. The bull was presented with impressive Estimated Breeding Values (EBV's), including +3 for its scrotal circumference, +112 for 600-day weight, +4.1 for Eye Muscle Area and +1.5 for intramuscularly fat.

Mr Crosby had his eye on the bull since he saw it at the stud's Beef Week Open Day and was impressed by it's outcross pedigree and growth for age.

The top priced female was The Grange YR Blackbird C78 by Kenny's Creek Eclipse W111 and from The Grange YR Blackbird A207, and sold for $5,500 over the phone to Jock Harbison, Dunoon Angus Stud, Holbrook.

Mr Harbison also bought another female, The Grange YR Blackbird C79, from the same family as C78 for $5000. Notably the two females were granddaughters of the infamous Davis YR Blackbird 558H, which was the $260,000 one-half interest top-selling female of the Riverbend sale in 2004.

Volume buyers included Gerard O' Brian, "Niero Plains", Lightning Ridge, who purchase three bulls for a top of $2333.

Willie Milne, Alpine Angus, Porepunkah, Vic, purchased a bull for $2000, a heifer for $800 and two semen packages.

Ivan Zaparenkov, Gheringhap, near Geelong, Vic, bought three females for a top of $1200 to average $933.

Stud principal, David Kirwan, said he was happy with the buyer support and interest in such tough times and to have two volume studs buy from the sale was a pleasing outcome. The sale was conducted by Elders, Albury and Michael Glasser was the auctioneer.
